About the Scheme and Level Descriptors

Part 1

The aim of this scheme is to teach dog owners how to raise better pets that are good, trusted loyal companions.  I am more than certain that people should be educated on how to be effective and responsible dog owners. Owners should manage to create a good balance between discipline, exercise and play. There should be a significant increase of responsible dog ownership together with highly socialising dogs worth of trust.  I am striving to create an environment where we can all live happily together without putting too much stress on our dog and relieving our pet from unnecessary pressures of our chaotic life, which at times results in mischievous behaviour from our dogs.  It is by becoming an effective leader that you are helping your own dog to trust in you and let you take all the decisions.  Once these leadership skills are established, the owner can proceed to tackle any problematic behaviour his dog might be going through, with a much higher rate of success.

I strongly believe that the PET scheme will definitely be a success. Unlike other dog training courses we are shifting the attention on the handler rather than the dog.  By doing so I will be empowering you and giving you the necessary set of skills to understand your dog.  This is the key to success, as by unblocking the barriers of misunderstandings and miscomprehensions between the human and the canine world there can be a mutual and better co operation between the owner/handler and his dog.

The first part of this training scheme is based on theoretical lessons where we shall be trying to understand the canine world and tackling good leadership skills, new training techniques, Maltese animal law, together with first aid and health issues related to our four legged friend.  Once the prospective PET student undertakes the established theoretical lessons he will be subject to a short exam where his knowledge and understanding of what has been discussed in the lessons will be tested.  Test will be on multiple choice bases and anyone having any difficulty in reading/understanding the paper can ask for assistance during the test. The pass mark of this test is 70%. If this mark is obtained the owner will be presented with a certificate showing his participation in the course and that he has reached a good level of Good Dog Owner.  From this point forward he/she can train his/her dog in the practical sessions of the PET scheme.

Those who pass the theory test will be eligible to train more than one dog if they wish to.  No one without the Good Dog Owner certification can proceed to the actual practical training.  In order to have a good control of your dog, dog training should start at home. I strongly believe that it is through the theoretical sessions that prospective participants will be fully equipped with knowledge on how to effectively work on effective groundwork at home in order to have a good dog that will eventually find no difficulty to be trained for all the levels of the PET scheme.
